Harbour Town golf club 18th hole

The tricky Harbour Town Golf Links were designed in 1969 by Pete Dye on Hilton Head Island - which is now today a well known golf and resort community. Harbour Town is thought to be one of Dyes' best designs. During the construction process he sought out the 'Shot Value' advice of Jack Nicklaus Dye's Harbor Town still holds it's mettle against todays long hitting touring professionals. Cut out of virgin lowland and intercoastal South Carolina terrain and at only 6800 yards - the front and back nines loop clockwise bringing all possible wind directions and a complete variety of golf shots into small and relatively flat but tricky greens.  Many of the golf holes are surrounded by their characteristic jet black brackish ponds and large dark 100 year old Spanish Oak trees.  Add in the abundant gray Spanish Moss hanging from the oak trees, and white sandy soil against the backdrop of green fairways and greens, and you capture a Mystique reminiscent of Robert Trent Jones’ west coast counterpart -the hilly Spyglass Hill golf club.  Reeds and intercoastal marsh land was part of what Pete Dye got to work with here at Harbour Town - a golf architects delight.  Dye does a great job with railroad ties bordering bunkers and fronting the greens with the finishing holes along the marsh and historic Calibogi Sound.
