Pat O’Bryan -was
the winning caddy on Chris DiMarco’s bag at the 2002 Phoenix Open. This
was Chris’ third win on the PGA Tour, and Pat’s second win with Chris.
Pat had experienced winning before on the Nike tour, and his first ‘official
caddy
win’ on the PGA Tour came on Chris' bag in 2000. Pat worked his way up through
the ranks of tour caddying with several different players over the
years. No doubt his experience was important on Chris’s bag
especially at this win in Phoenix, where they saw their four shot lead
quickly disappear on the back nine there on Sunday!
CaddyBytes.com -"So
Pat, How did you get into becoming a Professional Tour Caddy?"
Pat –"I
played, but I always wanted to caddy on the tour, saw it on TV but I had
no clue how to do it. Went out there like any guy. They had a Hogan event
down there in Ft. Myers in 1992, where I lived, and I just went out there
and got assigned a player. He asked me if I’d like to go the rest
of the summer, as we got along. I was trying to get back into teaching, I
was substitute teaching about 6 months out of the year at the time,
finally I just decided that I just wanted to caddy."
CaddyBytes.com -"And
who were some of the players you caddied for out there early on?"
Pat -I
started on the Hogan tour in ‘90’, ’91, and ‘92’, and saw Dickey
Thompson, asked him for Hattiesburg, he didn’t keep his card that year,
then I worked for Bob Friend for a couple years, and then I worked for
Jeff Gallagher for four years, ‘96’ through ‘99’, with ‘97’ on
the Nike Tour mostly, when Jeff had lost his regular tour card.
CaddyBytes.com -"So
when did you get hooked up with Chris?"
Pat -After
the ‘99’ season, Jeff lost his card and I got hooked up with Chris
DiMarco in the beginning of 2000.
CaddyBytes.com
–"So
you’re out there in 2000, you pick up Chris. And at the end of the year
you won in September, outside Philadelphia at Waynesboro Country Club. And
he won with his brother last year at Callaway Gardens near the end of the
year, but he showed you a lot of respect, a great guy. You get the
job back?"
Pat –"Yes.
He took me to Kapalua for the Tournament of Champions at the start of the
year in Hawaii."
CaddyBytes.com –"How does this win in Phoenix
compare to the first one in the end of 2000 in Philadelphia in your first
year caddying for Chris?"
Pat –"This
one was a lot tougher, we had a 6 shot lead in Philadelphia. After 10
holes in Phoenix we had a four shot lead, then we made a double at 11, cut
it to two, we bogeyed 12 and Kenny Perry birdied, that erased our lead
completely and got us back to even. The we bogeyed 13, and he parred the
hole, which then gave Kenny a one shot lead. Then we birdied 14, which got
us back to even again. Then he birdied 15 to get one ahead. Then we
birdied 16 to get even, and then he bogeyed 17, and we both parred number
18 giving us the win."
CaddyBytes.com –"Was
there anything in that back nine, particularly after you saw your four
shot lead erased in the first three holes there on the back nine on
Sunday?"
Pat –"After
the bogey on 13, I just said to him, ‘hey, they don’t reward the
trophy after 67 holes, we’ve still got five holes to play, let’s make
five birdies. We didn’t make five birdies we made two. But he came back
and hit a great drive on 14, and made a great birdie there. Hit a great
shot on 16 obviously!"
CaddyBytes.com -In
the Phoenix papers the next day, Chris DiMarco gave his caddy Patrick O’Bryan
credit for helping him stay calm during the adversity around the back nine
there Sunday, and eventually on his way to victory in the 2002 Phoenix
Open!
