CaddyBytes 🏆 2026 Masters Final Round Recap: Sunday at Augusta National felt like another Rory McIlroy roller coaster, but this time it ended with a second straight Green Jacket. McIlroy began the day with work still to do, quickly lost the comfort of his lead, and at one point dropped back to 9 under and three shots behind. What followed was not a stress-free march to the finish, but a final round built on patience, recovery, and enough big swings to turn the tournament back in his favor.

The early part of the round had the uneasy feel of a major slipping away. McIlroy got off to a slow start, made another bogey at the sixth, and for a stretch the momentum looked like it was heading in the wrong direction again. But instead of pressing or trying to force miracle golf, he stayed aggressive without getting reckless, exactly the kind of balance that has so often been missing in his previous major closeouts.

The round started to turn when McIlroy answered with birdies at the seventh and eighth. From there, the driver became much more reliable, and Augusta started to look like a course he could manage rather than survive. He played the critical stretch with far more control, including the smart second shot at the 11th that kept him out of major trouble, then followed with a bonus birdie at the 12th and another important birdie at the 13th to fully regain command.

What stood out most was how much smarter and steadier the round felt once he settled in. McIlroy hit 10 of 14 fairways on Sunday, mixed in more controlled tee shots when needed, and relied on shot shape and placement rather than trying to overpower every hole. Even on a day when the golf was not always clean, the decision-making was sharper, and that was enough to separate him again on the back nine.

He still had to earn it coming home. There were loose swings late, including more trouble off the tee at the 18th, but McIlroy once again found a way to manufacture the finish. He closed with a bogey at the last, just as he had the year before, but this time he had enough cushion to absorb it and finish at 12 under, one shot clear of Scottie Scheffler.

So the final round was not about perfection. It was about surviving the rough patches, trusting the aggressive game plan at the right moments, and handling Augusta National’s pressure better than everyone else. McIlroy leaves the 2026 Masters with back-to-back titles, a sixth major championship, and another performance that showed why this course now feels more and more like his stage.
