Bryson DeChambeau finished off a dramatic Championship Sunday in South Africa by winning the individual title in a playoff over Jon Rahm after both players ended regulation tied at 26-under par. The final round had pressure from every direction. Dean Burmester gave the home fans immediate hope with birdies on his first two holes to surge into contention, while Brandon Grace kept the South African charge alive with a series of clutch shots and a vital birdie at the 14th. David Puig also stayed in the mix with several sharp wedge shots and timely birdies as the leaderboard stayed packed for much of the day. The biggest duel, though, became DeChambeau versus Rahm. Bryson grabbed control with a run of three straight birdies early and kept the crowd engaged with another birdie at the ninth as he tried to hold off Rahm’s charge. Rahm steadily built momentum, birdieing the ninth, making eagle at the 10th to pull within one, then continuing his surge with another huge birdie at the 16th to draw level. He nearly stole the outright lead with a strong birdie try at the 17th, then posted 26-under after a closing birdie chance on the 18th left him tied at the top and waiting to see if Bryson could answer. DeChambeau did answer, and he did it while also leading Crushers GC to the team title in one of the tightest finishes of the week. With rain, mud, and waterlogged conditions adding even more pressure late, Bryson made the key birdie he needed to force the playoff and seal the team championship as well. In the extra hole, he produced the shot of the day from a muddy lie, a remarkable recovery that set up the winning chance. Rahm, after taking relief from casual water, could not match it, and DeChambeau calmly finished the job. It was another statement win for Bryson, who followed his Singapore playoff victory with yet another clutch Sunday finish, while Crushers GC edged the Southern Guards by a single shot in the team race.
