Dave
Renwick hails
from the town of East Calder one mile west of
Edinburgh
in Scotland. He first caddied when he was
11 years old around his native Scotland. He began caddying on
the European PGA Tour in 1983 after several years as a roughneck working
on an oil rig in the North Sea. His first pro caddy job was 'out of
the parking lot' for Anders Forsbrand.
He eventually hooked up with Jose Maria Olazabel in 1986 thru 1994
and was a part of 14 wins in Europe, 3 in
America
including the 1990 World Series of Golf and 1994 Masters, and one in
Japan while working for Jose Maria.
He went to work for Steve Elkington at the 1994 British Open full
time and they won the Callaway Gardens (Buick) tournament that fall.
In 1995 they won the PGA
Championship at Riviera C.C. Dave started caddying for Vijay
Singh in June of 1997 thru August of 2000.
In that stretch of tournaments they won a total of 7 times including the
1998 PGA Championship and 2000 Masters. Dave then went to work for
Lee Westwood until getting back in the saddle with Singh at
the 2003 U.S. Open. Davy was on the sack when V.J. began this
incredible run to #1 in the World Rankings. Together they won the
John Deere and Disney World Classic last year and was a part of 7 of
Vijay's nine wins this year on the PGA Tour including the PGA Championship
at Whistling Straits.
Dave has an amazing 38 plus 'Caddy Wins' in his career including four
major championships that include two Masters and two PGA
Championships. We sat down with soft spoken (walk softly caddy hard
and carry that big sack) Davy and talked about this amazing run through
the 2004 golf season after caddying for the #1 player in the world of
professional golf.
CaddyBytes.com -Congratulations
on a great year! I'm sure this year will be something you and Vijay
will remember for a long time to come. You won with him 7 of
the 9 wins (with his trainer getting the other two.) Hey everyone in
the golf biz knows how hard Vijay works and the hours a caddy has to put
in with that guy -forget his caddy having any personal life of his own
-but we all do admire the dedication and 'pure athlete' that Vijay Singh
really is. And he scores two (wins) with the trainer? I still
give you credit for hard work and endurance and helping get Vijay on auto
pilot enough to win even with his trainer (Joey Diovisalvi) on the
bag. I'll give you the tournaments you caddied the wins for in 2004
and you give me something about each one.
"Your wins start at
the 2004 AT & T at Pebble
Beach let's start there. Anything stand out in your mind about that
win?
Dave
-"He
played really well made a great shot in the situation on the 8th hole one
of the most difficult second shots in golf -it was one of the best shots
I've seen there -he hit a four iron to about four feet and made the
putt. That I believe was the turning point there."
CaddyBytes.com -You're
playing well with 9 top tens in 10 weeks and a win and a good tournament
at Augusta where you finish 6th and then you come to Houston and win it in
overtime on a Monday finish. And go back to back winning the next
week at New Orleans for wins #2 and #3 for the year. How about those
two?
Dave
-"Yep.
We weren't even in the last group playing with Paul Azinger there the last
day (Monday morning) with the final group playing behind us. He
played real solid there and that continued again the next week in New
Orleans and we almost won three in a row at Wachovia the following week."
CaddyBytes.com
-You
win in New Orleans again on a Monday rain delayed finish in a week of wet
weather. That's a credit to patience and I always felt a caddy
who knows how manage in the rain can be a factor. What stood out
about that win?
Dave
-"He
just played fantastic especially on the back nine and putted great. He
shot 29 there on the back nine to win at New Orleans.
CaddyBytes.com
-So
you're one shot off the lead at the 16th tee at Wachovia but can't quite
sustain it and finish poorly but that's within a couple holes of possibly
closing the door for three wins in a row -a spectacular feat. So you
play great right up through there and play well through three rounds at
the Byron Nelson and then he just plays terrible on Sunday with an
uncharacteristic 78. Then you don't play again in the U.S. until the
Buick and finish two shots short of another victory with the U.S. Open at
Shinnecock the next week. How'd he play Shinnecock and the British
Open leading up to your next win at the PGA Championship in
Kohler?
Dave
-"To
be honest with you he played good the first two days of both majors and
then just played poorly (for him) on the weekend both times. And he
actually didn't really play that well on Sunday in the PGA but managed to
win in a playoff."
CaddyBytes.com -So
then you finish two shots out of winning again at the John Deere play well
for the first two days at the British and poorly again on the weekend then
V.J. comes back and wins the Buick with his trainer his fourth win in
2004. And you come back in on the bag for the final major.
You'd won the PGA at Sahalee there in 1998 working for V.J. and he's
playing well but not on the weekend but you guys get it across the finish
line for another big win in a major. He played spectacularly there
in the playoff.
Dave
-"He didn't play
great on Sunday but still managed to win the tournament."
CaddyBytes.com
-Now you go to Deutsche Bank and win?
Dave
-"Yeah we beat
Tiger the last day and birdied three of the last four holes and overtook
him in the world rankings with the win as well. It was an impressive
performance to accomplish that and the way he did it as well."
CaddyBytes.com -That's win #6 for Vijay
#5 with you on the bag and finally a number one world ranking dethroning
Tiger in brilliant head to head fashion and you along for this ride again
since June 2003. So now you saunter into Glen Abbey and win back to
back to cement his new #1 World Ranking by beating Mike Weir in a
playoff for win #7 and #6 with you. Poor Mike Weir he's trying to be
the first Canadian in over fifty years to win their national championship
and he just couldn't get it in the hole the last few there. He must
have felt like David playing Goliath head to head against Vijay as the
added pressure. Then V.J. wins again at 84 Lumber with his trainer
again for win #8, and you're back on the sack at Disney where you finish 3
shots away from win #9. But you 'close the door' again at Tampa
Chrysler the next week for final win #9 and #7 with you on the sack.
What was the secret to all this good play and wins?
Dave
-"I can't really
say I have any answer for that Bob except to say that he played really
really solid golf for those last 6 months there."
CaddyBytes.com -What's your secret to
good caddying?
Dave
-"Just being
relaxed I don't let too much really bother me out there"
