The
EDS Byron Nelson Golf Classic golf tournament is a tribute to one of the
great's of the game. With the passing of Gene Sarazen, Ben
Hogan, and Sam Snead, and in 2006 Byron Nelson, now all of the great pioneer's of the modern game as we
know it today are now gone - though their legends live on.
Byron Nelson's career lapsed the tail end of Jones, Hagen, and Sarazen's
playing days on up through the inception of modern televised golf.
Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan grew up in this area and often competed in a local
tournament's from their day's as caddies.
Byron
Nelson once won 11 tournaments in a row and 18 overall, with a
scoring average of nearly only 67 strokes in 1945. He, like
the great Bobby Jones, retired at the peak of his career for a
different calling.
Nelson later achieved acclaim as a great
teacher of the game with his most notable students being Ken Venturi
and Tom Watson. Venturi called Nelson the inventor of the
modern golf swing and the purest ball striker he's ever seen with
the great Ben Hogan being the greatest manager of the game he'd ever
seen. As Ken Venturi once explained, "Hogan was not a
teacher. Hogan was an answer-er. You had to ask
him. What do you feel like when you do this, this and
this? Then he would tell you how he felt. Nelson would
volunteer the information. 'Here's what I want you to
do. Here's what I want you to feel.' A good teacher
will always work his lesson around you."
