Welcome to CaddyBytes.com’s Tournament's page for the 2016 British Open golf tournament played at the Royal Troon golf links in Ayeshire Scotland, UK. The British Open is the oldest of the four major golf chamionships beginning at Prestwick in 1860 with a field of just 8 professional golfers then expanding to allow amatuers to play the following year. In 1870 The Open joined the Royal and Ancient & the Honorable Company of Edinburg Golfers - the two major golfing societies and ruling bodies of the day. In 1873 the British Open left Prestwick (Scotland) as the lone host course - to a rotating format giving the St. Andrews Old Course it's first spot in that new rotation of host golf courses. The winners Championship Belt was then also replaced with the Claret Jug. Then in 1892 the event was expanded from 36 to a 72 hole event over four days and that is the format to this day where a field of 144 plays play for what is arguably the most coveted trophy in golf today. USA winners include Hagen, Jones, & Sarazen, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Tony Lema, Tom Weiskopf, Stewart Cink, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, Bill Rogers, John Daly, Todd Hamilton, David Duval, Ben Curtis, Mark Calcavechia, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, & Zach Johnson who defends here in 2016. |
