Welcome to
CaddyBytes.com's tournament's page for the 2008 U.S. Open golf
championship being played at the
Torrey Pines South Course in La Jolla, California.
Last year Oakmont hosted the 2007 U.S. Open Championship won by Angel Cabrera
with a winning score of five over par. It was in 1962 at Oakmont that a young Jack Nicklaus dethroned Arnold Palmer the
dominant player in the game at that time, in a playoff to win his first major
championship. Johnny Miller won the U.S. Open with a final
round 63 at Oakmont. Larry Nelson set the record for the final 36 holes of a U.S. Open with
a score of 132, (65 and 67 on the weekend), to win the U.S. Open at Oakmont in
1983.
Records like these are most likely to stand with the way the Open courses are
being set up today. A winning score of several over par seems to be the norm
these days to win a U.S. Open as compared to in Nelson's day where around even
par was the U.S.G.A.'s goal to obtain victory. And this year's difficult
setup at Torrey Pines appears ready to continue that trend for another 'over
par' victor to emerge.
The U.S. Open is the oldest golf championship of national prominence in America
with most all the greats of the game winning at least one to justify their
historic resumes. It is also known as the second leg in the Grand Slam of
Golf. Angel Cabrera will be defending champion with Masters
winner Trevor Immelman in pursuit of that elusive second leg of the Slam along
with a former San Diego native Phil Mickelson still in quest of his first U.S.
Open victory.
