the 2013 HP Byron Nelson Championship golf tournament.
The world of golf lost a great man, statesman, teacher, and friend with the
passing of 'Lord' Byron Nelson in 2006. His competitive legacy
continues to awe the golf world with 11 straight tour wins, 18 in one year, and
a record scoring average of 68.33. Records which may never be broken. (1945)
The EDS Byron Nelson Classic is an
extension of the original greater Dallas TX, area professional golf tour events dating back
to 1926 with the inception of the first Dallas Open golf tournament. The tournament
became known as the Byron Nelson since 1968 as a tribute to a great golfer and man from the
greater Dallas Metroplex/Ft. Worth area, Mr. Byron Nelson.
Seven of the world's top 22 will be playing this week in Dallas which
includes Phil Mickelson, and newcomers Louis Oosthuizen and Padraig Harrington.
This is the event where a year ago a new star emerged with the 2011 winner
Keegan Bradley who later went on to win the PGA Championship in August in
Atlanta. This is also the event that presented the tournament winner's caddy
with a new Cadillac - that being Bradley's caddy Steve 'Pepsi' Hale.
There have been some great champions in Byron Nelson and Dallas Open past
including MacDonald Smith, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Tom Watson, to
name just a notable few. Adam Scott won the tournament in 2008, Rory
Sabbatini in '09', Keegan Bradley in 2011, with Jason Dufner defending this week
after winning here in 2012.
